Being diagnosed with gum disease is difficult news to hear. But the good news is that it is treatable. Modern gum treatments allow skilled dentists to stop the spread of decay and improve the damage done to teeth and gums. Gum disease, also referred to as periodontal disease, is caused by the build-up of bacteria in the form of plaque on teeth and gum tissue. Failure to maintain good oral hygiene, maintain cleanings, or bad eating habits can all contribute to bacterial damage.
Dr. Miller believes in treating each patient according to his or her individual needs, using the least invasive and affordable solution. Depending on your level of decay, you may be able to control the gum disease with non-surgical treatment such as scaling and root planing. During scaling and root planing, Dr. Miller uses special tools to thoroughly clean root surfaces and remove decay-causing plaque. Dr. Miller may suggest antibacterial treatments in the form of oral medication to help curb chances of infection, or enzyme suppression treatment, which uses oral medication to minimize damage from harmful enzymes.
If less invasive methods do not deliver dramatic improvements, Dr. Miller may suggest periodontal surgery. Gum surgery becomes necessary when gum tissue is damaged beyond repair. Types of gum surgery include pocket reduction procedures, regenerative procedures, crown lengthening, and soft tissue grafts. After a thorough evaluation, Dr. Miller will recommend which options will successfully manage your gum disease. Whatever treatment you choose, you will need to maintain the results through good oral hygiene, healthy eating habits, and regular check-ups.
