Dental Implants - FAQ
Albany, New York
Who makes a good candidate for a dental implant procedure?
Dental implant patients should have good general health with an adequate amount of bone in the necessary location to anchor the implant. Dr. Miller will let you know if a dental implant will be a successful option to replace your missing tooth or teeth.
Is success guaranteed with a dental implant?
Although there are inherent risks with any dental procedure, the risks are few with a dental implant. As long as the patient is in good health with no unexpected concerns, the dental implant should provide a successful solution to missing teeth. When the dental implant is placed into the bone, there is no risk of the body "rejecting" it. Good oral hygiene, regular home care, and regular check-ups can help keep the dental implant functional.
How long do dental implants last?
Just as with natural teeth, they should last a lifetime with proper care. However, injury, lack of hygiene, missed dental cleanings, and bad eating and chewing habits can cause wear-and-tear to your dental implant. For long-lasting results, take care of your implant with the same diligence as your natural teeth.
Will my dental implants require special treatment?
Dental implants are crafted to be strong and durable, but they require the same care and attention as natural teeth. Regular brushing and flossing, semi-annual check-ups, proper gum care, and good eating and drinking habits will help keep your implant healthy.
Is the dental implant procedure painful?
Dental implant procedures are considered pain-free due to the anesthesia used during surgery. For mild post-operative discomfort, an over-the-counter pain reliever should do the trick.
How long will the dental implant process take?
Depending on the number and location of dental implants, the actual procedure can last anywhere from 30 minutes to a few hours.
Following surgery, the dental implants will require a period of a few months to bond to the jawbone, during which you can choose to wear a temporary denture. After the bonding is complete, Dr. Miller will attach a metal post to the dental implant in what is considered the second phase of treatment. During your third phase of treatment, your new teeth are created, fitted, and attached to the dental implant.
